What Every Kid Wants From Their Parent
Our Kids Want The Same Things We Wanted
We were all kids once and we had some of the same wants and worries as our kids have now.
As we get older, it may be difficult to accurately remember how it felt when we were young.
Although some people may have had perfect parents, most people have a few things they wish their parents knew then and our kids wish we knew now.
The following are 35 things that all kids wish their parents knew.
I Need My Parents
1. Don’t try to be my friend; I need a parent so much more
2. Don’t make jokes at my expense
3. I need to feel safe
4. Come into my room to see me when you miss me; not just when I’m in trouble
5. Play with me
6. Don’t talk to me about grown up problems or situations I can’t fully understand yet, it just makes me worry
7. It scares me when you drink alcohol
8. Eat dinner with me
9. I desperately need your acceptance
10. When you talk bad about my other parent, you are talking bad about a part of me and it makes me feel like I’m not good enough for you
11. Much like when a baby cries, when I act up or misbehave, it’s because I need something
12. My temperament and maturity rate may be different than yours was, don’t make me feel wrong for not being you.
Encourage Me
13. Tell me you are proud of me
14. Encourage me to try new things
15. Let me work for things, it makes me feel powerful
16. Don’t say, “I told you so” when I fail, just be there to help me up so I can try again
17. Don’t bail me out when I get in trouble at school or in an argument with my friend, guide me in the right direction so I can solve it myself
18. Give me the emotional freedom to develop my own ideas and values
Teach Me
19. Teach me how to express myself when I am hurt and angry
20. Teach me how to budget money
21. Teach me good manners so I won’t be embarrassed or unfairly judged when I’m in public
22. Teach me how to cook
23. Teach me about sex, respect for my body and others
Show Me
24. Show me you think I am capable of doing things on my own
25. Show me what it’s like to be a part of a healthy adult relationship
26. Show me how to take care of my body and be proud of it
27. Show me how to do household chores
28. Show me all of the good the world has to offer but warn me of the bad
Talk To Me
29. Tell me something good or funny about your day
30. Tell me about your values and explain why you feel that way
31. Spend time with me so you will know my true feelings and needs. I don’t have the self-awareness or vocabulary to tell you what I am feeling.
32. When you know something is wrong, be patient with me until I can tell you what it is
33. Ask about my day and don’t always accept “fine” as the answer
34. Tell me I am individually special and tell me why
35. Tell me what great and unique qualities I bring to the family
Tell me you love me everyday
